Peace is not the absence of storms, rather, it is an inner calmness that is undisturbed by what is happening in our surroundings. There can be all types of chaos in our surroundings and with other people yet inward we remain calm. Calmness does not mean that we do not care, it does not mean that we are not aware of what is happening, it does not mean that we accept everything that is happening. Rather, it means we are aware of everything that is going and of everything that people are saying but we choose to remain at peace. We choose not to allow the external chaos to translate into internal chaos.
When we lack peace, we become worriers, you know, worrying about everything; about what other people said, about what other people did not say, about what other people did or did not do, about what is happening in our country, about what is happening in the world. Worry can drive us into physical and psychological illnesses. There are people who have all the money they will ever need yet lack peace, there are those who do not have much yet are content.
Peace is not contingent on what is happening within or around us, it is not based on what we have or do not have, it is not affected by what is happening in our surroundings or the world at large; peace only comes from God.
Peace is defined as “freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility”. There are people who may be going through disease and illness yet they have a lot of peace, there are those without many material things yet they have peace. It is possible to be at peace regardless of our circumstances. When we know who is in charge of our lives, we will not live a life full of chaos. We are called to cast all our anxieties to God because He cares for us. We should always guard our hearts at all times.
One of the things that steal peace is doing the wrong thing or saying the wrong thing, usually lies. When people tell us to do something that goes against our values, against morality, against the Word of God, we should be on watch never to conform. People will say and do anything to achieve what they want; they will lie, manipulate, blame us for their mistakes, and even coerce us into doing or saying something. If we ever do or say as they want, we will be at a place where we have no peace. Such people tend to deny everything afterward. They will approach innocent people and manipulate them into carrying out their wishes.
Some people will be your friend as long as things remain the way they want them to remain. Some will be there as long as you go along with them in deeds and words. But when things change, when you stand up for yourself, you see their masks fall off. We should always be on guard. We should never be people-pleasers; we are to please only God. As long as everything we do and say is in love, we owe nothing to anyone.
The Bible tells us that if it is possible, as far as it depends on us, we should live at peace with everyone. Living at peace though does not mean we accept anything and everything from other people. It means we stand our ground, it means we establish boundaries, it means we treat everyone with respect, it means we carry out our duties. It does not mean we conform. It means standing for what is right and true with love.
One of the best investments we can have is knowing the truth of the Bible. Knowing the truth sets us free. No one can stand against the truth. Knowing the truth guides us in our actions and words. Knowing the truth helps us not to conform to the patterns of this world. Knowing the Word of God and acting according to what the Word says helps us to remain blameless in an evil and corrupt world. When we know the truth, we live without complaining, we speak up and do it in love.
Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world. Philippians 2:14-15.
Complaining and arguing leave us without inner peace.
The Word of God is our guide. When we remain in God, He remains in us. We are never to repay evil with evil. We should always repay evil by doing good. Nothing can stand against a person doing good in accordance with the Word of God. With time, the Holy Spirit matures His fruit within us, peace being part of it. Jesus told us in this world we will have troubles, but we should take heart because He has already overcome the world. This world is not our home; we should never forget that. Knowing that then, we should always keep in mind who we are and where we are headed. We should never forget our identity in Christ.
Our guide is the Word of God; that is what keeps us stable and unmoved in this world. We keep our eyes focused on our eternal home.
Let your gentleness be obvious to everyone. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:5-7.
God has promised to give us peace. We stand on the promises of God.
Blessings.
