The Bible tells us that love is not selfish. We live in a self-centered world; in a world where the majority think about themselves, about what will benefit them, about what serves them. We interact every day with people who if they have nothing to gain from us, then they do not see the need to interact with us any longer. People will approach us for what they can gain, some will even ‘milk us dry’ and then flee.
It is a world where the carnal human nature is in control for the majority.
Anyone not led by the Spirit of God is led by the flesh, and the fruits of the flesh are evident. Selfishness is ingrained in the fallen human nature, we are born selfish, thinking about ourselves and only ourselves, we are self-preserving most times at the expense of other people. It is a cruel world, it is a world where love has grown cold. We cannot overcome carnal nature by ourselves, we need God; we need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.
Love is not selfish, it never demands or insists on its own way, it does not seek things of its own, it does not seek to aggrandize itself. Selfishness is defined as a ” lack of consideration for other people.” It is comparable to egotism, self-absorption, and insensitivity. Do we consider others when we do something? Do we consider others when we say something? Do we consider how our words and actions will affect the other person? Or are we just consumed with ourselves?
Selfishness and love do not go together.
A selfish person will even force you to do or say something that you do not want to do or say; they will tell you that you have to do such and such irrespective of how much such a thing affects you negatively. A selfish person is only concerned about themselves, and when you finally ‘lose value’ in their sight, they will walk away and not turn back. Selfish people will not apologize, they will not ask for your opinion and even when they do, they will not put your opinion into consideration, they might even tell you that your opinion means nothing.
Love is not selfish! Most people are easily deceived, they confuse love with emotions or with sweet words. We should always check the fruit of the person who claims to love us. If they are selfish then they are incapable of loving us. If we are selfish then we are incapable of loving others.
We should all search our hearts and ask God to reveal to us things in us that do not please Him, and empower us by the power of His Holy Spirit to change from the inside out, and to teach us what true love is. God is our standard of love, that is why apart from God, we cannot do it on our own; we learn love when we get connected with God.
We are living in the last days where human beings are lovers of themselves.
For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy. 2 Timothy 3:2.
Let us be sober lest we get deceived.
Jesus Christ died for us, He is the manifestation of love. God did not spare His own Son, He gave Him up so that we might be saved; and because Jesus died for us, we no longer live for ourselves.
And He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. 2 Corinthians 5:15.
Sometimes we are selfish with everything including with life itself, yet we never gave ourselves life; we belong to God. We are to live a life surrendered to God. The Bible tells us that whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Christ’s sake will find it. We have to learn to hold things of this world loose. We are to use what we have for the glory of God. We are never to use people as a means to achieve our selfish gains; we are to love people, and love is not selfish.
Things of this world will pass away. Many things we consider important in this world usually have no eternal significance. When we realize the truth that even our lives belong to God, then we will realize that we should not be self-seeking but in everything we do and say, we should do it as unto the Lord.
For we brought nothing into the world, and neither can we carry anything out of it. 1 Timothy 6:7.
In the end, only the treasures we store up in heaven through loving others and service to God will matter. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
Blessings.
