The Human Will And Power Of Choice

Share

Will equals choice. We have free will, an ability to choose. We can either choose good or bad. We can choose to follow God or the devil. Anytime we reject God, we say yes to the devil. There is no in-between. We are either of God or of the world. It all starts with a choice. Choosing to follow God is an active choice, in involves a complete change in our life; our values change, what we regard as important changes, our world view changes.

We do not automatically follow God. No. It is a choice, a daily choice. On the other hand, when there is no active choice to follow God, we end up following the world, which comes almost automatically. We live in the world and as such, it is easy to just go with the flow, you know, to do what others do and say what others say. Following the world’s way is the wide path, it is the easy path, it is the path most people follow. Why? Because it involves no accountability, except to the law of the land. For many, as long as they deem themselves to be on the right side of the law, or if they think no one will find out, or if they think they can get away with something, then, they end up doing or saying anything they want, or manipulating their way out.

With time, we realize that it is God who empowers us to live as He desires by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Doing good and loving is difficult, we cannot do it alone. We often find ourselves doing what we do not want to do, and not doing what we ought to do. We need God. God only wants us to choose Him, then, He takes over, He empowers us to do what the world says is impossible, or what some people may consider foolishness. When we choose God, we realize He is actually here with us. God is real. When we invite Him into our lives, everything changes. His power starts manifesting in our lives. His presence becomes real to us.

The Bible says we will seek Him and find Him when we seek Him with all our hearts. We have to search for Him. We have to open our lives to Him. God never forces Himself on us. We cannot know Him until we are willing. We have to have the will to know God. We have to take time studying and meditating on His Word. We have to know God’s character through His Word. His Word is life, it lives, it gives life.

The Word of God is God Himself speaking to us. It is the written Word of God.

In the beginning, we are told the earth was formless, then God spoke a Word, let there be, and there was. That is how God’s Word is. It is power. We have to know God personally so that we can recognize His voice when He speaks. He does not impose His will on us. He speaks with love, He speaks with a still small voice, He speaks through circumstances or through other people, He speaks through His Word. But first, we really have to know Him personally, in a relationship kind of way, so that we can recognize when He speaks. Anything that contradicts His Word and character is not from Him.

With time, we realize we are not to do or say everything other people tell us, we are not to accept everything other people say to us, about us, or about other people. We are not to accept every thought that comes up in our minds. We have a choice. We can choose. We can choose what to accept and what to reject. But we have to know what our standard is. Our standard is the Word of God; it is not what the majority do, it is not what the majority says, it is not how the majority carry themselves, it is not what the society says; it is what God says.

As long as we owe no one anything other than love, as long as we are doing and saying everything in love, we have nothing to apologize for. We have a choice! We do not have to gossip just because others are gossiping, we do not have to lie,  or cheat, or manipulate, we do not have to go with the crowd, we do not have to be friends with people who are destroying us or are not good for us, we do not have to do anything that goes against God’s Word just because other people say so. On the contrary, we can choose to do good and love others by the power of the Holy Spirit.

We can choose to bless, to build others, to help those in need, to return evil with good.

We are no longer under the sinful world’s law; Jesus set us free from the law of sin and death. We do not have to worry if we are doing everything with love. If what people are telling us to do or say is wrong and does not please God, we say no. It is within our choice to say no. We should never be double-minded, we should never conform. The Bible says, let your yes be yes and your no be no; anything more than that is from the evil one. We should not say, no, but. We should never say yes to anything that is wrong or goes against our God’s Word just to please another person.

There is a line that should never be crossed, we only ‘compromise’ on things that do not cross the moral and God’s Law line. We should never allow others to impose their way on us. We owe others nothing except to love them; love covers a multitude of things. The Bible tells us that love is the fulfillment of the law. Love does not mean we allow others to do what they want or say anything. It means if something is wrong we say it is wrong, it means we do not allow others to drive us into a deep dark hole. It means we do not allow people’s brokenness to be part of us, we offer help where we can, but then direct them to the cross. Only Jesus saves us, only He fulfills us, only He is the way.

Choices have consequences; may we never forget that. God requires obedience. He does not force us to do or say anything, we have to choose His ways out of our own free will. Our choices in this life will determine where we will spend eternity. May we choose wisely. When we choose God, He directs our paths. Choosing Him means we have to surrender our will and align it with His will in accordance with His Word. We do what He says.

If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask Him, and He will gladly tell you, for He is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to those who ask Him. James 1:5.

We do not receive because we do not ask, the door is not open because we do not knock, we do not find because we seek not.

We may devise our way, but it is the Lord who directs our steps. As many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become sons of God, to them that believe on His name. When we do God’s will, we realize that He is indeed who He says He is.

Blessings.
